Abstract

This research investigates the role of urban agriculture in addressing food deserts, emphasizing its potential to enhance food security in underserved urban communities. Food deserts, characterized by limited access to affordable and nutritious food, disproportionately affect low-income populations, leading to adverse health outcomes. Urban agriculture offers a viable solution by transforming vacant lots, rooftops, and community spaces into productive gardens and farms. This study explores various urban agriculture initiatives, including community gardens, vertical farming, and aquaponics, highlighting their contributions to local food systems. By providing fresh produce, these initiatives not only improve access to healthy food but also foster community engagement and cohesion. The research further examines the environmental benefits of urban agriculture, such as reducing carbon footprints and promoting biodiversity. Additionally, it addresses the challenges faced by urban farmers, including regulatory barriers and resource limitations. The findings underscore the importance of integrating urban agriculture into broader food policy frameworks to create sustainable solutions for food deserts. Ultimately, this research advocates for the expansion of urban agriculture as a critical strategy for promoting food justice and enhancing the overall well-being of urban residents.
